River Cruise Newsletter Dated January 27, 2015

Dear Vacations To Go Customer,

This week, I'll show you photos of some of the top attractions of river cruises in the U.S., Asia, South America and Africa. Just click the links below to see the highlights of these waterways, from the Mississippi to the Yangtze.

Mississippi River cruises glide through America's heartland, stopping in cosmopolitan cities and unique river towns. Among the sights are Oak Alley, a historic antebellum plantation protected by a canopy of 300-year-old oak trees; the French Quarter, New Orleans' oldest and most famous neighborhood; and the 630-foot-tall Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

The rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest awaits you on a Columbia River cruise, where excursions might include a hike among the towering cascades of Multnomah Falls or a trip to volcanic Mount St. Helens. Sailing through the Columbia River Gorge is a highlight; at 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep, it carves the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountains.

The Hudson River flows from the Adirondack Mountains to New York City. Famous landmarks include Sleepy Hollow, Franklin D. Roosevelt's lovely estate of Springwood and West Point Military Academy. From the New York Harbor, you'll have broad views of the city's skyline and the Statue of Liberty.

Natural wonders are in store for guests on Amazon River cruises in Brazil and Peru. Tiny tamarin monkeys, sloths, jaguars and caimans dwell in this region. The Amazon basin is home to an array of eye-catching birdlife, including the scarlet macaw and the toucan.

Yangtze River cruise tours start or end in Beijing, where guided sightseeing includes a stop at the Forbidden City. Built in the 15th century, this complex of nearly 10,000 rooms served as the imperial palace for 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. You'll also take an excursion to the Great Wall and to the Terra Cotta Warriors of Xian. A highlight of the sailing is the passage through the Three Gorges -- soaring cliffs that rise high above the river.

Temples, floating markets and vibrant cities are among the intriguing sights of a Mekong River cruise through Cambodia and Vietnam. Attractions include Tonle Sap Lake, known for its rich birdlife and fishing villages, and the Silver Pagoda in Phnom Penh. Many departures also incorporate Angkor Archaeological Park, a 12th-century complex of ornate stone structures and beehive towers.

Irrawaddy River cruises in Myanmar (Burma) typically are part of longer land itineraries that include hotel stays and sightseeing in cities like Yangon in Myanmar and Bangkok in Thailand. See Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda, considered the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese; visit a floating market in Bangkok; and view the 18th-century, wooden Yoke Sone Kyaung monastery in Salé.

Our Ganges River departures combine a weeklong sailing along India's sacred river with hotel stays in such cities as Agra, where you'll see the magnificent Taj Mahal at both sunset and sunrise. Explore the sights of Old Delhi and New Delhi, including the sandstone Red Fort, and learn about Mother Teresa's work in Kolkata, where you'll also visit the stately Victoria Memorial Hall, now a museum.

Nile River cruises are incorporated into longer land tours that nearly always include excursions to the Sphinx and the Pyramids at Giza. On your cruise, you'll encounter some of Egypt's most famous antiquities, such Abu Simbel, where the colossal sculptures dwarf visitors. You'll also likely have an opportunity to sail in a felucca, a traditional Egyptian wooden sailboat.

Chobe River vacations explore sights in southern Africa. They combine a multinight cruise on the river with game viewing in safari preserves and sightseeing in cities such as Johannesburg and Cape Town (where, after a cable car ascent, you'll take in the sweeping views from Table Mountain). Tour Botswana's Chobe National Park, famed for its large population of elephants, and marvel at spectacular Victoria Falls.
